About the Depot
The Depot is operated by the Ellerslie
Volunteer Fire Department and is
available for use by community
residents, nonprofit organizations,
civic clubs, businesses and
nonresidents. Use of the Depot is
scheduled on a first-come first-served
basis and EVFD events are given first
priority. A user fee is charged to
offset utility and maintenance costs.
The handicapped accessible Depot now
features two new restrooms, six lighted
ceiling fans, central heat and air, a
large front deck and ramp. The original
railroad ticket window now works as a
convenient pass-through serving window
in the newly remodeled kitchen.
The exterior of the Depot, with its
Victorian gingerbread trim, is painted
in the original 1891 color scheme.
Inside the original wood flooring, two
antique church pews and an antique piano
add to the Depot's charm.
Depot Restoration Project History
In May 2005 the first phase of the project
began when the building was relocated to
the original position where it was
constructed in 1891 along the former
railroad tracks at the intersection of
Harris Road and Warm Springs Road,
facing Georgia Highway 85. Since then
the exterior of the building has
undergone minor restoration and been
repainted in the 1891 color scheme of
ochre yellow and green. A new metal
shingle roof was added and a front porch
is under construction.
The interior restoration was completed in
February 2007. The interior has been
modernized to include new restroom
facilities, new electrical wiring and
lighting, a new heat pump has been
installed and much more. Throughout this
intensive reconstruction, the original
1890's wood planking and siding and the
many historical architectural features
have been preserved and restored.
We would like to express our thanks to
everyone who donated items and
volunteered to work at our March 3, 2007
yard sale fundraiser. Our goal was to
raise $1500-$1800 to have the original
1891 wood flooring in the Depot repaired
and restored. We raised an amazing $1930
for the Project and will now be able to
complete the flooring restoration.
While the project has received support
from Harris County's Board of
Commissioners, a financial grant from
the Georgia Department of Transportation
and donations from numerous families,
the EVFD encourages the citizens of
Ellerslie to join us in our continued
efforts to raise the money needed to
improve the facility for the benefit of
our entire community.
We will be working on the landscaping
phase of the project over the next few
months. Anyone interested in donating
fill dirt, labor/equipment to grade the
property, plants and trees, create
planting beds, pour a concrete pad, lay
a brick walkway, etc. should email
evfdchief@gmail.com or call (706)
568-0705. We do not have a time line
prepared yet but we are in the planning
stages for the landscaping project. We
would love to hear from you.
Donations to the EVFD are tax deductible.
